Two More Members of The Tax Appeals Tribunal Sworn In

The Court of Appeal/Constitutional Court Administrator, Hon. Justice Geoffrey Kiryabirwe, today presided over the swearing in ceremony of two members of the Tax Appeals Tribunal (TAT) on behalf of the Deputy Chief Justice, Hon Justice Richard Buteera, at the Court of Appeal.
Those sworn in were; Ms Stella Nyapendi Chombo and Ms Proscovia Rebecca Nambi, making the Tribunal complete with nine members.
Justice Kiryabirwe congratulated the new appointees and the Tribunal for now being fully constituted.
He advised the Tribunal to introduce a robust electronic case management system the way Judiciary has and also use of Alternative Dispute Resolutions (ADR) for faster resolution of disputes.
He further encouraged them to expeditiously resolve tax disputes since their delay affects operations of some businesses, and also provide some guidance to both the tax payer and the Uganda Revenue Authority(URA) in matters related to tax disputes
In her remarks, the Chairperson of the Tribunal, Ms Crystal Kabajwara explained that the TAT is not a branch of the URA, but rather an independent body with quasi-judicial powers
She thanked the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development for the timely appointment of the two members hence making the Tribunal fully constituted.
She thanked Justice Kiryabirwe for presiding over the swearing-in the new members.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Registrar Court of Appeal HW Allen Rukundo Owembabazi and Personal Assistant to the Deputy Chief Justice HW Allan Gakyaro.
